At the start of every turn, you'll collect taxes from your counties; the more counties you control, the more money you bring in. The gold you collect you can use to raise armies for your campaign forces or county garrisons, to build strongholds on your provinces, or to partially pay off King Richard'sransom . If Maid Marian is around, you can send her to spy on an enemy province, which will give you a permanent look at the troop strength in that territory. Once you're done reinforcing your army or your defenses, you will have a few basic choices. You can go on a raid in one of your enemy's provinces, you can hold a jousting tournament with Sir Ivanhoe serving as your proxy, or you can attack a neighboring province with your army to bring it under your control. Each choice opens up a different minigame.

World War II shooters are about as rare as sunny days in Arizona. So to really succeed in the genre, a game must either be innovative, particularly engrossing, or a little of both. City Interactive's Battlestrike: Force of Resistance is none of the above. It doesn't compel you to run back to the computer to play it, it doesn't offer anything that makes you say, "Hey, I haven't seen that before," and in fact it's so short that veteran players will finish it in a single afternoon. Nevertheless, there's something about it that isn't entirely unlikeable.

Perhaps it's the variety. Unlike many budget-priced wartime shooters, Battlestrike doesn't feel repetitive. It doesn't plunk you down into the same situation over and over again, and it certainly isn't one big, never-ending firefight on a nameless battlefield somewhere. Instead, it asks you to take on the role of one John Forsyth, a British-trained commando operating behind enemy lines and leading the resistance movement as it tries, ever so slightly, to derail the Nazi war machine.

It didn't take long for EA and DICE to turn out Battlefield 2: Special Forces, the expansion to this year's smash online action game. And judging from the teething problems that the expansion is having, it looks like EA and DICE Canada (the developer of Special Forces) didn't take long enough. That's because Special Forces is an excellent expansion that delivers more of the intense online combat that fans of Battlefield 2 adore, but it's also crippled by some potentially showstopping bugs. If you can get it running, though, you're in for a great time.
